About Us

We are two women, best friends and partners, who have been inspired by our friends and colleagues to travel the world. Our trip idea began with a brainstormed list of global sites we want to see, celebrations we want to witness, natural wonders we want to photograph, cities we want to visit and foods we want to eat. After planning a route that spans 5 continents in an effort to visit over 40 countries, we hope to depart after Christmas in December 2012 or in early 2013 for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

About Us

September is the founder of Top Knotch Gear. This small business was the result of experimentation, exploration and endless support from family and friends. After surfing the web for survival bracelets and becoming quite discouraged with some outrageous price tags, September (who often answers to ‘Sep’ or even ‘Moose’), decided to experiment by making a survival bracelet on her own. Originally intended as a travel gift for her girlfriend Morgan, September made her first paracord bracelets by watching online videos and by knotting special parachute cord from the Czech Republic (courtesy of her friends and travel mates, Kate and Smolda). The bracelet was such a huge hit, that September began making key chains, luggage straps, necklaces, dog collars – nearly anything she could think of. Coworkers were among her first customers to buy the paracord gear and in August 2010, Top Knotch Gear was born.  September has been inspired by Morgan’s travels to Asia. She is excited to travel the world, explore life on different continents and eat wonderful food, all while meeting fellow travelers along the way. “This is an adventure of a lifetime. I can’t wait for it to begin!”

Morgan is the marketing manager and photographer for Top Knotch Gear. During undergrad, Morgan was fortunate enough to spend two summers abroad in Asia – one as an English and dance instructor, the other as a photographer. Having slept in airports, hopped through hostels, mimed her way through conversations with people who didn’t speak English and backpacked in sweltering heat, Morgan is ready to explore more of the world with her best friend and mate, September. She not only looks forward to seeing the parts of Asia she missed the first times but she is excited to trek through uncharted territory with her camera for the perfect shot. “This trip is not just for me but it’s for all of our family and friends who will never visit these ends of the world. It’s a chance for them to see and experience the globe through our adventures.”

Our Travel Philosophy

Do as the locals do. We have known many friends who have gone abroad and spent glorious vacations in 5-start hotels, yachts, the works. We, on the other hand, are not only new to travel but we are spending most of our savings for this experience. Therefore, our budget is on the low/conservative/adventurous side. We will engage with locals, try to learn bits and pieces of various languages, try local foods and do as much as we can to not stand out as American tourists. This trip is a chance for us to see what a “day in the life” is like for people all over the world. While we may splurge here and there for a pina colada in a coconut or for a safari tent instead of pure mosquito netting, our goal is to complete this trip on a limited budget (approximately $15,000 each) and learn as much about local cultures as we can.

  1. Hello Ladies!

I am a fellow Etsytarian who just set up shop a couple of weeks ago. I bought your Japan Disaster Relief Bracelet (which is totally awesome and totally my style) and YOU had actually INSPIRED ME to create a few pendants and sell them with 100% being donated to the Red Cross. I started out with deciding to make only 5 when all of a sudden my phone rang and a friend of mine decided to purchase 20 of them! so, I guess 25 will be my magic number as of now 🙂 Which is so coo!, because there is no way I would have been able to donate $250.00 to the red cross myself.

So, after seeing your shop along mine in numerous treasuries, I checked out your sales and was SHOCKED and DELIGHTED to see the dozens and dozens AND DOZENS of bracelets and key chains have sold!!! IT’s AMAZINGGGG!!! I am sooooooooo happy for you! (boy, are you guys going to be busssssssyyyy)

Then… I checked out your blog and I saw that the talent behind top knotch was a young lady who was traveling with her partner and best friend :c) HOW EXCITING!!! I have been with my partner and best friend now for 10 years, and we were JUST talking this evening how it would be great to travel around and support our travels by selling FLiPS!DE items!

You both are a true inspiration! Way to go after your desires and dreams!!! And I look forward to following your adventures through your Blog…

    BIG SMILES :c)
    Tara

  4. are you still planning on leaving for your trip or is your new business going to keep you in Florida for a while?

    • The new business here in FL has postponed our trip until 2014 (originally 2012). But we’re grooming other family members to take over for us while we’re gone. 🙂

  5. Andy

hay there, I saw a couple of beautiful pictures on the internet. I’m from Amsterdam and was wondering if you can make a collar and leash for my dog? Hope to here from you, kind regards Andy

    • Hi Andy,

Thanks for checking out our blog! We apologize it has taken us so long to get back to you – we’ve been swamped with orders for the holidays. We can definitely make you a collar and leash for your dog! Here is the link to the pet gear section of our store:
      http://www.etsy.com/shop/TopKnotchGear?section_id=7339996

We offer a few different knots for collars but we highly recommend the adjustable collar. It’s the most popular and does not require an exact measurement. The other collars are great but if your dog is very active, the paracord may stretch.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email us! topknotchgear@gmail.com and we’ll get your message quicker than on here.

      Thanks!
      Morgan
